Faculty

  • Maggie Rapier

USA Today Bestselling Author of SOULGAZER

Born in the South with a healthy streak of wanderlust, Maggie is an incurable romantic who loves nothing more than wordplay and witchcraft—except, perhaps, her sourdough starter. When she’s not marketing French antiques or writing about moody girls and sexy pirates, you can find her wandering in the woods with a basket in hand.

Her debut novel is a Celtic-inspired, Adult Romantasy titled Soulgazer that will publish with Ace/Berkley and Penguin Randomhouse in the summer of 2025.

  • Sarah Mughal Rana

    Acclaimed author of HOPE ABLAZE

Sarah Mughal Rana is the author of forthcoming epic fantasy trilogy, Dawn of the Firebird, and is the acclaimed author of the novel Hope Ablaze (Macmillan, 2024). She is an MPhil candidate at the University of Oxford, exploring the intersection of policy and human rights. Her debut was selected as Librarian Mychal Threet’s debut book club pick and earned a Junior Library Guild Gold Star standard. Beyond the page, Sarah co-hosts the On The Write Track podcast, where she spills the tea with bestselling authors. When she’s not writing, you can find her diving into historical rabbit holes or honing her skills in traditional martial arts.

  • Marina Green

    Literary Agent, Editor, & Host

By day, Marina is literary agent, previously a Big 5 acquiring editor. Avid supporter of the Oxford Comma and the em dash, Marina is also a freelance editor by night, founder of Marina Edits and Return to the Wild.

In her free time, you can find Marina with her nose in a book or clicking away at her laptop, chasing new stories and wrangling them into wild submission. When she isn’t immersing herself in story, you can find her with a cup of tea in hand, trying a new yoga asana—never at the same time—or practicing Armenian, the language of her ancestors.

Storytelling is rooted in the land

The Location

Storytelling is rooted in the land. Cumbria, a picturesque county in northwest England, is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. Dominated by the majestic Lake District National Park, it features an array of shimmering lakes, rolling hills, and rugged mountain peaks. The region is characterised by deep valleys, vibrant woodlands, and a rich tapestry of wildlife. In addition to its serene lakes like Windermere and Derwentwater, Cumbria boasts charming villages, historic stone buildings, and rich agricultural land. The changing seasons bring a unique beauty to the area, with lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and a serene stillness in winter. Whether exploring the serene trails or enjoying the panoramic views, Cumbria is a haven for nature lovers.

Located only two-and-a-half hours from Glasgow, Brownber Hall sits on ancient land that mingles contemporary with centuries-past history. Rivers for wild swimming, lakes, waterfalls, forests, and Lake District wildlife, make a unique blend of wild & mythical to ignite any writer’s spark.

Accommodations

The 2025 Return to the Wild Retreat will be hosted exclusively at
Brownber Hall in Cumbria.

With spectacular views over the Howgill Fells, 2 sitting rooms and 8 bedrooms, Brownber Hall is the perfect spot for gathering. The Victorian country house has been lovingly restored to modern but comfortable glory. Vintage furniture mingles with William Morris prints, contemporary art and piles of books, while the kitchen table invites you to swap wellies for slippers after a long walk, and relax with mugs of tea.

This hidden corner of the Yorkshire Dales is an outdoor playground, whether you’re walking through the Smardale Ghyll nature reserve or wild swimming in the River Eden. Come evening, fire up the barbeque and firepit, pour some drinks and dine together on the south-facing terrace, then grab blankets and hot chocolate and stargaze from the hilltop behind the house. Night skies are absolutely phenomenal, strung with constellations.

Brownber Hall has been featured in the Sunday Times, The Telegraph, Guardian, Condé Nast, Harper's Bazaar, House and Garden, Suitcase Magazine, Vanity Fair and Marie Claire.
